OVERVIEW OF CONFECTION SUNFLOWER AT MINN-DAK

Minn-Dak Growers Ltd. has been a contractor, processor, and supplier of confection sunflower products for over 20 years. Our commitment to the sunflower industry has allowed us to expand this enterprise to serve customers in the United States and throughout the world. We have state of the art cleaning, sizing, and hulling facilities to provide consistent quality for your sunflower ingredient applications.

CONFECTION SUNFLOWER AS A CROP

The bright yellow fields of confection sunflowers are the starting point for obtaining high quality in-shell and kernels. At Minn-Dak, we work closely with our growers to provide them with the latest information for selecting hybrids, planting, fertilization, and pest management so that they obtain the best yields possible. Our commitment to sourcing the best quality sunflowers is by contracting our production directly with our growers.

Confection sunflowers offer an excellent rotation crop for growers. Numerous high yielding varieties are available for production in the northern plains. Information on sunflower production is available upon request.

Sunflowers are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin E, and other important nutrients. A typical 100 gram sample of sunflower kernel has the following nutrient profile:

Functional

The nutty flavor of the sunflower kernel enhances taste, texture, and appearance in numerous food applications. Sunflower kernel can be used as a topping on salads, breads, yogurt, and ice cream, or can be blended into numerous baked goods and confectionary products.

• It is roasted and salted in the shell to be eaten as snacks.

Kernel

• It is used as snacks, salads, and ingredients of many food products.

• Mainly used for bird seed.
